iceni Productions is now the top corporate communications company in the Midlands according to a survey by industry magazine Televisual.
Award winning work for First Group, Welcome Break, Kleeneze and the Learning and Skills Council, has put the Midlands based communications company at number 1 in the region and number 34 in the UK.
Companies in the corporate communications list, compiled by Televisual, are awarded scores for the number of video commissions; hours of content delivered; turnover for corporate work; and reputation among their peers.
iceni delivered more hours of business television and corporate video work in 2005/06 than in any other year in its history, with commissions up by over a third on the same period last year.
‘It is an exciting time for business communications,’ said Andi Jepson, Director at iceni. ‘Our position as the number one corporate communications company in the region is the result of the rapid growth of our multimedia design department, coupled with our continued production of high quality, high profile video projects for clients across the UK. Commissioners want creative, effective programmes delivered to an audience in the most appropriate way - through the web, interactive disc, ipod and even on a 3G phone.’
‘iceni has leapt ahead of the crowd by recognising that visual communications doesn’t just mean video anymore. We’re video professionals with a portfolio of great programmes produced for some major brands, and we’re also an award winning new media team.’
Cathy Bentley, Managing Director of iceni adds, ‘We deliver corporate communications across a range of media with the same high standards and production values as London agencies, and our inclusion in the Televisual list is testament to that. Because most of the briefing and approval of our work is done online, and the filming is done across the world, success is down to the quality and effectiveness of the work, not where a company is based.’
iceni is currently working on video, interactive DVD and web based projects for Everest, the LSC, First Group, Siemens, Kuppersbusch and Teka.

iceni puts new broadcasting technology in the picture
iceni Productions Ltd is leading a worldwide email video streaming campaign to promote affordable wireless video technology.
The innovation from The Boxx has been hailed as ‘revolutionary’ by broadcasters and is already being used in the field by the BBC, CBS and ABC.
Delivering a quality picture through walls and floors with digital microwave links has only been available to major production companies and large outside broadcast firms in the past because of cost.
The Boxx’s less expensive version of microwave technology means it’s now accessible to a much wider group of customers.
iceni is promoting the innovation to other media organisations and companies or groups who may have been interested in knowing more but were fearful of the cost.
iceni director, Andi Jepson, said the email marketing campaign focused on the authority and credibility of the technology, and included a clip from a CBS ‘live to air’ news show.
He said: “Since distribution of the video e-mail, we are told demand is out-weighing supply for the equipment and interest has been generated with American and German suppliers.”
Designer and director of The Boxx, Scott Walker, said: “The cost of the system is so far removed from those on the market at the moment, ours being £4,000 as opposed to £30,000, that we needed a way to show our audience that low cost does not equate to low quality.
“To do that, we needed a cost-effective visual media that could spread the word, and the images, far and wide.
“Not only does the footage highlight the quality of the shoot, it gives us instant credibility being seen to be used by a high profile channel.
“iceni’s online video streaming has attracted huge interest, especially at NAB 2006 and other trade shows and exhibitions we attended as part of the initial marketing campaign.
“We’ve had enquiries from some end users we hadn’t thought of targeting such as eastern European broadcasters that simply couldn’t afford other wireless packages, race tracks and even wedding video companies.”
More information about the technology can be found at www.the-boxx.tv.

‘It looks like TV!’ How to Commission Successful DVD, Video and Screen Based Business Communications
Written by Cathy Bentley award-winning director at iceni, a UK visual communications company, this free guide will help you brief a Video Production Company and outlines the things you need to consider when commissioning a successful Video, Film or DVD project.
A Little Bit of History
In the 80s and early 90s video was widely acknowledged as the best way to deliver training; promote a product or service. It is entertaining, highly effective and requires little effort from the viewer. It was also ‘cool’.
Then in the late 90s came the Dot Com Boom – This new and exciting technology meant that everyone had to have a website or a CD-Rom. Suddenly video tapes were seen as old fashioned.
Corporate Video Production Today
But things are changing again. Today, the widespread uptake of broadband, and ever more sophisticated encoding and data compression mean that video can be delivered at excellent quality to a large number of viewers at little cost. Video no longer means a black plastic tape – it has merged with digital media – with affordable ‘Hollywood studio’ quality MPEG encoding, advances in webstreaming and the ubiquity of the DVD, screen-based media can be delivered in many ways:
CD-ROM (small amount of video on a small screen size) with text.
DVD – lots of video in smaller sections with interactivity such as menus and downloadable documents.
Webstreaming – the high quality video on our website http://www.iceni-tv.co.uk/ proves how viable this cost-effective distribution method is for delivering your MD’s message, your customer testimonials or your promotional video - and it gives your website personality.
Video-mail – video embedded in an email sent straight to your client’s inbox means you’re not relying on your time-poor target audience to open a tape or CD case and put a tape/CD into a machine to watch your programme.
Retail TV – many shopping centres, pub chains and supermarket chains have their own in-house screens.
Call Centres/office receptions – A video jukebox system can show your promotional video as a key client arrives – or educate call centre staff from their desk.
Billboards, PDAs, Pen Drives and Mobiles - iceni can encode video for almost any delivery format - how do you want to reach your audience?
So, How Do You Go About Commissioning Corporate Video Production for Your Company?
For the purposes of this article, let’s assume your corporate video production project will include video production as well as graphical/multimedia content. iceni can of course provide multimedia projects without video, but video production is our core service – it’s what we’re passionate about.
It’s important to sit down with a production company and discuss your requirements in detail rather than just emailing a brief to several companies to get comparative quotes. There are subtleties about your company that cannot be understood from an emailed brief such as preferred terminology, your company culture, your personality and your working environment.
Try to establish a rapport with your chosen company. Video is very labour intensive and you will need to work together to get the most from your investment.
Before you meet them, you should think about these questions –

Birmingham Stars Given Thumbs up for Film
A dvd starring pupils from Birmingham schools has received national acclaim as a teaching aid from the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf.
The pioneering council project, which highlights ways of including children with hearing impairment in mainstream schools, has just been given a five star rating for its innovative style and content.
A rave review was published in the January issue of Batod’s magazine, commending the subtitled, 15 minute presentation for its easy to understand style as well as features such as audio tracks which simulate hearing loss.
Commissioned by Birmingham City Council’s Action for Inclusion team, the dvd was produced by Midlands-based iceni Productions, who have since followed its success with a film about students with visual impairments.
Iceni’s film shows the ways in which hearing impaired pupils can be helped with learning, as well as giving an insight into the challenges faced from every angle through frank interviews with class teachers, parents and the children themselves.
Reviewer, Jane Bishop, a teacher of the deaf in Newcastle upon Tyne said: “The dvd is ideal for training situations.
“Information is presented via real life situations which are readily applicable. It is particularly helpful to hear the children talking about their experiences.
“The audio tracks are also brilliant. Recordings demonstrate hearing loss, background noise and reverberation, listening through a radio or hearing aid and sound field amplification.
“This will probably be a real eye opener for many mainstream staff. I’m sure the dvd will be widely used.”
Lynda Holland, children with hearing impairment coordinator at Birmingham City Council said: "We are really pleased with the dvd and how iceni has translated our positive message.
“We are delighted to get such a glowing review from our peers."
Cathy Bentley, managing director at iceni, said: “We rarely get feedback from the end users of our training dvds, so this review means a lot to us.
“It is great to see that the amount of research that went into filming the project was worthwhile, and that we have helped to produce a valuable resource.”
The dvd is available to buy from Birmingham City Council by contacting Joan Jones on 0121 303 2619 or joan.jones@birmingham.gov.uk

iceni Cleans up at Awards
A Midlands film production company has received international recognition with a prestigious award for work promoting a major home sales company.
iceni Productions was presented with a silver award in the International Visual Communication Association’s excellence awards on Friday, March 24.
This is the second award iceni has won for the Kleeneze project, which involved producing a film to help recruit more distributors.
It also triumphed in the regional audio visual category from the British Association of Communicators in Business earlier this year.
This latest success will see iceni listed alongside recent IVCA award winners such as the Olympic Film for the London 2012 bid and BBC Worldwide.
The IVCA is the largest professional body of its kind in Europe and received entries from across the globe. More than 200 judges with specialist knowledge from across the visual communications industry were involved in selecting the winners.
Judges agreed iceni’s submission “demonstrated an excellent understanding of its audience that was translated into a creative and engaging experience. The content was well targeted and clearly conveyed its message.”
A trophy and certificate was presented to iceni’s managing director, Cathy Bentley, and producer director, Andi Jepson, by Radio Two’s Jeremy Vine at The Grosvenor Hotel in London, before an audience of 900 VIPs.
A spokesperson for the IVCA said: “The Awards set a standard of excellence and introduce clients to programmes and projects which have made a significant impact on business.
“As past recipients will testify, there is no higher accolade for creativity, originality, production expertise and sheer effectiveness.”
Production of Kleeneze’s ‘Opportunity’ DVD - presented by BBC Holiday’s Ginny Buckley - involved completing three versions in different languages.
iceni’s crew filmed in Sydney, South Africa, Rio and most recently at the glamorous One&Only Le Touessroc Hotel in Mauritius as part of the company’s international travel incentive for its top distributors.
The interactive DVD is also being featured on Kleeneze’s satellite shopping channel, and recent recruitment figures show that one in ten viewers of the film is signing up to work with the company.
Cathy Bentley said: “The award is an added bonus to what has been a really enjoyable project to be involved in. We are delighted to win, but it’s important to me that the video we make is a success for our client and contributes to their ability to grow their business.
“Around 16,000 distributors rely on the Opportunity DVD to promote their business and this was always in my mind. As a result, we’ve produced a promotional DVD that is far removed from a corporate presentation, something bright, glossy, entertaining and above all - believable.”
Michael Khatkar, European sales manager at Kleeneze, said: “The latest
Opportunity DVD from iceni has broken the mould once again, producing a
superior piece of work in a fresh, innovative style. The award is much
deserved.”

West Midlands Entrepreneurs Highlighted in Promotional DVD Video Project
The inspiring success stories of eight Midlands businesses have been spotlighted in a new video designed to show how Advantage West Midlands is delivering on its vision of building a world-class region in which to work, rest and play.
Managers from companies such as SecureBox, The Character Shop and SenSelect speak frankly in the ten minute production about the valuable support they have received through the scheme which has provided the Midlands with new hope for the future.
Produced by Midlands based iceni Productions Ltd, the short documentary creates an inspirational overview of what Advantage West Midlands has achieved in the area, both in raising its business profile and in creating a greater sense of pride for those living and working within it.
Andi Jepson, managing director at iceni, said: “The thought-provoking selection of interviews provide proof that stories of one man bands becoming global enterprises are no longer the stuff of dreams and that re-locating to the heart of the country can provide an economically viable alternative to setting up in London.
“It is poignant that Advantage West Midlands chose a local company to promote the area and I hope our genuine interest in the success of the project, and our empathy with fellow Midlands business-people, comes across in the video’s production.”
Through focusing support, funds and expert advice on new businesses the video shows how Advantage West Midlands is helping transform the region’s economy by returning its reputation as a front-runner in innovation, creativity and industry. Now high technology companies and dynamic manufacturing enterprises can be found side by side within the equally diverse settings of buzzing cities and beautiful shires.
The video was first shown at Advantage West Midlands’ annual conference on October 20, 2005 at Ricoh Arena in Coventry, which provides AWM with a platform to show exactly what they have achieved over the last twelve months and look forward to their goals for the next year.
Neil Skitt, head of PR at Advantage West Midlands said: “About 800 delegates attended the event with representatives covering the private, public and voluntary sectors and everyone was hugely impressed with the content of the video.
“The production team at iceni really understood the brief we gave them and they captured the essence of our message, showing the extent to which AWM supports business, in a clear, concise and interesting way.
“It’s one thing for us to tell people what a difference we are making to the region’s businesses, but it is another for the businesses themselves to provide anecdotal evidence.
“In fact, the response to the video was so positive that we intend to keep using it throughout the year as a marketing tool, to give other businesses an idea of how their own aspirations could be realised through a partnership with AWM.”
Mr Jepson added: “The disparate companies highlighted in the video provide an insight into the far reaching projects AWM are involved in.
“From revolutionary fingerprint and mobile phone technology to film archives and special effects animation, the video shows how partnerships with AWM have provided invaluable contacts, advice and grants that have turned people’s visions into reality.
“The people involved were incredibly engaging and the interviews were an absolute pleasure to do.
“I’m really pleased the feedback has been so positive and I hope the video continues to drive this exciting and essential project forward.”

Visually impaired Birmingham youngsters set for DVD stardom
Five Birmingham youngsters are set to become the stars of a new DVD designed to show teachers across the UK how visually impaired pupils can be successfully included in mainstream schools.
The film is a joint initiative by Birmingham City Council's Action for Inclusion team, who are providing funding for the project, and the Team for Children with Visual Impairment, part of Birmingham City Council's Specialist Support Service.
Five pupils are taking part including seven-year-old Lucy Williams from Chilcote Primary School. Other schools being filmed for the project, with children ranging in age from 8 to 17, are Colmers Farm Junior School, Handsworth Grammar School, Hodge Hill Girls School and Plantsbrook School in Sutton Coldfield.
Filming started on October 18 when Midlands based iceni Productions Ltd attended the first of the schools involved.
Cathy Bentley from iceni Productions explained that the film will follow the children throughout their school day and explore steps taken to include them in lessons.
Sue Johnson, Birmingham City Council's co-ordinator of the Team for Children with Visual Impairment, said: "It is vital that schools are kept up to date with help that is available for such pupils.
"Two previous projects which dealt with autism and hearing impairment were extremely successful and, as soon as funding became available, we wanted to build on this promising start by highlighting visual impairment."
Cathy added: "The DVD tackles serious questions about how such youngsters can genuinely mix with children who aren't visually impaired. It is fascinating to see the range of measures undertaken to help make this happen.
"From portable Braille machines, 'tactile' diagrams and sign systems to classroom assistants and a mobility officer helping pupils to increase their independence, there is a strong support network to help them have full inclusion within mainstream school.
"For us this has been a very important piece of work. We are committed to projects that genuinely make a difference so it has been a privilege to be involved.
"We also need to say a big thanks to all the young people involved as they have been complete naturals in front of the camera."
iceni previously worked on a similar project with the Action for Inclusion team on how autistic pupils can get the most out of school. Backed by the National Autistic Society, the DVD is now available through Birmingham City Council to teachers throughout the country.
The new DVD about visual impairment will be available from February next year. Head teachers from across the region will be invited to view a sample of its contents and buy it before it is launched nationally at a conference for visual impairment practitioners being held at Birmingham University later in the month.

Corporate Video Production Company iceni on Track for Success
A DVD created by a Midlands production company to help promote a leading rail franchise has been entered for two prestigious awards after wowing industry bosses.
iceni’s completed film will celebrate three years of work by First Group plc and Keolis SA, who took over the Northern franchise in 2003, and have since transformed the TransPennine Express train service.
Together with Siemens and HSBC, they have invested £260 million to improve rail links and stations, and introduce a new fleet of 100mph, state of the art, air-conditioned trains.
TransPennine decided to break from corporate tradition by releasing a ‘teaser trailer’ of the final DVD film to keep its staff up to date with the impending launch.
Marketing manager at First TransPennine said: “We wanted it to look and feel really different to the normal corporate films produced, and iceni really listened to this, and came up with exactly what we had asked for.”
Positive feedback has been flooding in from railway staff.
First Group’s Interim Finance Director said: “This is the first time I have seen this style of approach - very slick and professional. Presented as a blockbuster trailer, it builds up the anticipation of something spectacular that everyone will want to see.”
Following the reaction of industry chiefs at the Railway Ball in November, where the trailer received a standing ovation, iceni decided to enter it into this year’s audio visual awards with Communicators in Business and the International Visual Communications Association.
The industry awards highlight excellence in business and public sector communications, and are internationally recognised. Nominees will be announced in the next couple of months.
The completed documentary-style film, showing how the improvements have been achieved, will be released to the government and rail industry bosses as well as TransPennine staff and shareholders as part of the official summer launch.
TransPennine has added to iceni’s substantial list of major clients that have put them on the map for providing a first class service in the communications industry.
Managing director, Cathy Bentley, said: “We are thrilled with the momentum of our success over the last couple of years and entering these awards has given us a real boost for the first quarter of 2006.”

iceni’s completed film will celebrate three years of work by First Group plc and Keolis SA, who took over the Northern franchise in 2003, and have since transformed the TransPennine Express train service.

UK Visual Communications Lead the World
UK visual communications companies won a haul of awards at the 2006 U.S. International Film And Video Festival The festival, founded in 1968, is one of the world's leading international events devoted exclusively to recognising outstanding Business, Television, Documentary, Entertainment, Industrial, and Informational productions.
UK corporate television and business video producers fought off competition from broadcasters and communications agencies from over 25 countries.
iceni Productions, a UK video production company based in the Midlands, won two prestigious awards: the ‘Certificate for Creative Excellence’ in the Corporate Communications: Dealer, Distributor, Franchisee category and the ‘Silver Screen’ award in the Corporate Communications: Employee Orientated category.
Cathy Bentley, Managing Director of iceni explained why these projects received international recognition,
‘Certificate for Creative Excellence winner, The One & Only Mauritius, was produced for Kleeneze UK Ltd to promote a sales travel incentive and features film shot by iceni at the world famous Le Touessrok resort.’
‘Every year Kleeneze PLC, Europe’s leading network marketing company, rewards and recognises its top Distributors with an all expenses paid conference at one of the most exclusive venues in the world. The 2007 event will be held at the world famous One&Only resort in Mauritius.’
‘The promotional film introduces subtle branding and product placement, with the Kleeneze catalogue appearing in key scenes. The result is a powerful motivational tool, and a creative solution that proved much more effective than stock footage of a resort.’
The DVD premiered at a conference attended by over 7,000 Distributors, the stunning film caused palpable excitement amongst the audience, and feedback after the event was excellent. The promotional and motivational film is aired three times a week during the Kleeneze Show on the company’s satellite shopping channel.
Silver Screen award winning film Are You Ready? was created for First TransPennine, First Group, Siemens, and Keolis and celebrated the launch of a fleet of 51 Pennine class 185 Desiro DMUs throughout 2006.
Andi Jepson, Director of Are You Ready? said,
‘First Group is the UK’s largest surface transportation company with a turnover of nearly £2.7 billion a year and some 67,000 employees across the UK and North America. First TransPennine is investing $600M in 51 state-of-the-art trains that will ensure maximum comfort and efficiency; providing passengers with the ultimate travel experience. First Transpennine commissioned iceni to produce a promotional film that would effectively generate excitement amongst staff for the train’s launch in the summer of 2006.’
Our creative solution was Are You Ready? a movie trailer giving audiences a brief glimpse of First TransPennine’s summer blockbuster: the 185. The trailer features sound bites from key engineers and management, demonstrating the magnitude of the task and celebrating the achievement in an unexpected and memorable way. The audience is left exhilarated and wanting to see more – and of course they will as the trains enter service in 2006.’
Edith Rodgers, Customer Services Director at First Transpennine Express said,
‘A key area of delivering customer satisfaction and service excellence is ensuring that our people support the implementation of this investment in new Pennine class 185 trains. We are delighted by this award, as this DVD has played an important part in preparing First TransPennine employees for the launch of new trains across the north of England.’
Andi Jepson adds,
‘Results are key to any successful communications project. Our company’s focus on results has made iceni a leader in the UK visual communications industry. This recognition from one of the leading business communications festivals demonstrates our work’s effectiveness on a world stage.’
The Film and Video Festival Awards ceremony will be held in Hollywood, California in June. The Silver Screen award and Certificate of Creative Excellence add to iceni’s 2006 haul of a CiB Award of Excellence and an IVCA Award for External Multimedia.
Ends.
